100% Disability in Texas, what does that get you exactly?
The Monthly Disability Compensation payment is what most people know about and will start there. Now the 100% rate does not differ by state it is the same no matter what rank you were. How long you were in it’s all the same based on a few different factors. Now it does make a difference in your monthly payment if you’re married if you have children, if they’re in college, if they’re under 18 those specifics do make a difference but the 100% rate currently in 2023 for a single person with no dependents is $3737.85 that is the low water line for 100% currently as of today.
Veterans who are rated 100% disabled by the VA are eligible for free or Low-Cost Healthcare through the VA healthcare system. This can include medical treatments, prescriptions, and other services that can help manage their health conditions. Texas Veterans have access to one of the largest VA medical networks! Depending on your retirement status, spouses and child dependents may be eligible for CHAMPVA insurance for 100% disabled veterans as well!
Veterans who are rated 100% disabled by the VA may be eligible for a variety of Education Benefits, including the Hazelwood Act, which provides up to 150 credit hours of tuition exemption at Texas public institutions of higher education for qualified veterans and their dependent children.
Disabled veterans in Texas may be eligible for a Property Tax Exemption of $12,000 on their primary residence only. Veterans who are 100% P&T disabled may qualify for a TOTAL property tax exemption.
The Texas Veterans Land Board makes tracts of land available for Texas Veterans and Military Members to bid on in our quarterly land sales held every January, April, July, and October. Texas Veterans and Military Members may use the VLB Land Loan to purchase these tracts or other non-commercial properties in Texas that are one acre or more. Land not sold during these quarterly land sales is made available for public purchase. Currently, there is no public land for sale.
Most all Veterans, but especially veterans who are rated 100% disabled by the VA may be eligible for VA home loans. These loans can offer favorable terms and conditions, including no down payment requirement, no PMI or private mortgage insurance, and competitive interest rates. The VA funding (usually 3% of the total home cost) fee is also waived for all disabled veterans in the state of Texas.
In Texas, there is a Vehicle Tax Exemption available for 100% disabled veterans. This exemption provides an exemption from the payment of the state motor vehicle sales tax and provides a discount on the annual registration fee. To qualify for this exemption, the veteran must have a 100% service-connected disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The vehicle must also be titled and registered in the veteran's name and used primarily for personal transportation. To claim the exemption, the veteran must provide a copy of their VA disability rating letter, along with proof of vehicle registration and payment of sales tax, to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
The exemption must be claimed within four years of the date of purchase. In addition to the sales tax exemption, disabled veterans are also eligible for a discount on their annual registration fee. The discount varies depending on the county of registration, but is usually between 50% and 100% of the regular fee. It's important to note that this exemption and discount only applies to the state motor vehicle sales tax and registration fee. Other taxes and fees, such as local sales taxes, title fees, and inspection fees, are not exempt.
Free License & Texas tolls?
Honorably discharged disabled veterans rated over 60% by the VA receive a free drivers license, good for 9 years.The Mobility Authority’s Qualified Veteran Discount Program waives tolls on several Mobility Authority toll roads for eligible veterans, who must be in a vehicle registered with the State of Texas and display a qualifying specialty license plate.Qualifying Texas license plates are disabled veterans and recipients of the Purple Heart, Legion of Valor and Medal of Honor awards.
Entertainment and Leisure
Disabled veterans rated over 50% both resident and non-residents of Texas, qualify for the Super Combo Hunting and all-weather fishing package.
Disabled veterans rated at least 60% also get free access to Texas State Parks, or a free Texas Parklands Passport. A companion gets free entry as well.
